These institutions—what he calls Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs)—”interpellate” individuals into subject positions, meaning they call us into socially constructed roles that align with elite interests. Unlike Repressive State Apparatuses (e.g., police), ISAs function mostly through consent, not force.
