Althuser, Ideological state apparatus - Althusser argues that ideology is not just a set of ideas, but a material system embedded in institutions (like schools, churches, media, what we call Ideological Institutions that reproduce the ruling class’s dominance by shaping how individuals think and act. These institutions—what he calls Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs)—”interpellate” individuals into subject positions, meaning they call us into socially constructed roles that align with elite interests. Unlike Repressive State Apparatuses (e.g., police), ISAs function mostly through consent, not force.
